Orthotics are specialized medical devices that are worn inside shoes to correct foot position, improve gait, and reduce pain. They help to redistribute pressure across the foot and realign joints. They can be created to go in all different types of shoes. These differ from over the counter arch supports, which provide mild cushioning for general comfort.
A custom orthotic is prescribed and created for each individual patient. A medical diagnosis is determined by one of our physicians prior to prescribing custom orthotics. Our physicians perform a full lower extremity and gait exam and determine what type of insert and modifications may be required to optimize function. Advanced diagnostic technology is utilized to capture the exact contours of your foot in its most functional position. High quality, medical grade materials are utilized in every device.
Retail supports are prefabricated for general comfort and minor arch support. They are typically lower quality than a custom orthotic, and are mass produced. These are not custom medical devices. Locations such as The Good Feet Store may mention a personally fitting orthotic, but they are essentially offering over-the-counter shoe inserts. The staff at these types of stores have no medical training or licensing.
Please call the office to inquire about cost. On occasion the cost can vary based on diagnosis and medical issues being treated. Most insurances do not cover orthotics except in specific cases. Unlike retail stores, such as the Good Feet Store, which typically over charge for a prefabricated, plastic insert, custom orthotics are made from medical-grade materials and custom to the patient's needs.
